Umakunda, a remote Himalayan rural municipality in Ramechhap, has become a fully vaccinated rural municipality.

At a special program organized on Saturday, Bagmati Province Health Minister Kiran Thapa Magar and Public Health Office Ramechhap Chief Bibhukumar Jha handed over the certificate of fully vaccinated rural municipality to the rural municipality.

The rural municipality had set a goal of fully vaccinating all wards by Chaitra 12, 2082. As per the same goal, 155 children from birth to 15 months in 7 wards have received all the regular vaccinations they should receive. Similarly, all wards were declared fully vaccinated on Chaitra 18 after it was confirmed that 468 children aged 16 to 59 months had completed all the vaccinations they should receive within 15 months.

According to Avijit Sunuwar, head of the rural municipality health section, the work of reaching every household in remote settlements and bringing children to the access to vaccines has been successful only after continuous efforts. He stated that the role of women health volunteers, health workers, public representatives and guardians was crucial and said that maintaining this achievement is the main challenge now.

Rural Municipality Chairman Sher Bahadur Sunuwar said that this achievement is the result of the community's joint efforts. He said that it is a great success to include all children in the vaccination service in Umakunda, where even basic health services were once difficult.

Health Minister Thapa Magar emphasized that the education, health and infrastructure sectors should be promoted equally to build a prosperous province. He said that only if there is effective coordination between all three levels of government can citizens of remote areas feel real change.

He committed that the Bagmati Province government will move forward by creating a special program for the development of Umakunda, which is far from the provincial capital and considered geographically remote.

He also said that he will coordinate with the relevant ministries to move forward with the stalled plans. Minister Thapa Magar said that this achievement of Umakunda has set an example that health services can be effectively provided even in remote areas.
