The road connecting the remote Kailash Rural Municipality of Makawanpur has been blacktopped for the first time. The road in this rural municipality, which is dominated by the Chepang community, is about to be blacktopped 43 years after the track was opened.

The road expansion and upgrading work in Kailash is now underway with the joint efforts of the federal, provincial and local governments. The distance from Chuniya on the Tribhuvan Highway to Kalikatar, the center of Kailash Rural Municipality, is 21 kilometers.

This road, whose track digging began in 2039 BS, is being leveled and blacktopped for the first time. With an investment of Rs 50 million from the federal government, 5 kilometers from Chuniya to Namtar Bazaar are being blacktopped, said municipal technician Sushant Nepali.

The road from Namtar Bazaar to Kalikatar, the center of the municipality, is being upgraded. Lok Bahadur Moktan, the rural municipality chairman, informed that the upgrading of the 7-kilometer-long Bhaltar-Banjhakri road section, which is being constructed with an investment of Rs 180 million by the provincial government, has reached the final stage.

In the past, the road was constructed under the Food for Work program run by the then District Development Committee. Technicians say that there were technical problems in completing the road construction as the initial survey was from the wrong location.

Thousands of locals also contributed their labor to the construction of the road, which was built on the slopes of Bhainse and Namtar VDCs that are prone to landslides every year. For the past few years, the local, provincial and federal governments have allocated budget for this road and the road is being blacktopped after correcting technical errors.
