The family of Prem Acharya and Shiva Prasad Acharya, who have been living in Okayama, Japan for 20 years, reached the remote hill village of Kanda in Chitwan with their children on Thursday. Prem's son Sumit, 19, and Shiva's son Shirish, 12, who are originally from Baglung, fasted on Falgun 25.
Prem said that they have donated food and stationery to the hostel where the Chepang children of Kanda are studying by deducting the dakshina collected during the fast and other expenses.
Prem has been helping in various parts of Nepal and the hilly areas of Chepang for the past 10 years. There is a Kumar Balaram Memorial Hostel run by Lakshmi Pratishthan in Kandama, Rapti Municipality-13. 140 students study at the Kandeshwari National School in Adai. Most of the students of the school, which offers education up to grade 8, are from the marginalized tribal Chepang community.
'I had come to this place before with help. Now we have come here with our sons and daughters and family. The son who fasted, Shirish, was born and raised in Japan. They have been studying there. Sumit has also been there for a long time. They have provided 50 sacks of rice of 30 kg each for the hostel and stationery for the students. Sharma informed that they have provided materials worth about 150,000 rupees.
While studying in the hostel, students get everything from clothes to food, accommodation and stationery free of cost. Lakshmi Pratisthan has been running the hostel in Kandama since 2072 BS. Lakshmi Pratisthan's chairman Bishnu Gautam said that the hostel is being run with the help of donations from Nepalis living in the country and abroad. Kanda's dormitory cooks 90 kilos of rice in a day.
