The Bagmati Salak Conference organized in Madi, the district, concluded on Monday with the issuance of a 7-point declaration. The declaration was issued for the protection of the salak, stating that it is in danger due to poaching for illegal trade and habitat destruction.
The Bagmati Province Ministry of Forests and Environment organized the conference . As informed at the conference, there are 8 species of salamanders in the world . The conference was organized to reduce the risks seen in salamander conservation . Provincial Minister for Forests and Environment Bharat KC inaugurated the conference . The first point of the declaration mentions that conservation education programs will be conducted on the initiative of stakeholders for habitat management in forests and protected areas where salamanders are found .
It is said that programs will be conducted by involving the local community on the initiative of the federal, provincial and local governments as well as conservation partner organizations to control poaching and illegal trade . Since salak is a protected wildlife, illegal hunting and trading of it is punishable by imprisonment for 5 to 15 years and a fine of up to 1 million rupees, said Chitwan Divisional Forest Officer Bishnu Prasad Acharya, who coordinated the conference.
The declaration states that necessary studies and research will be conducted for salak conservation with the participation of the local community, national and international organizations, universities and the three levels of government. It is said that a conservation action plan will be made and implemented in a way that is owned by the locals.
The declaration calls for holding salak conferences in 7 provinces and the national level. Sending written greetings for the conference, Bagmati Province Chief Minister Indra Bahadur Baniya has pledged to declare salak the pride of the province and to make a policy and budget for its conservation.
