An agreement was signed on Tuesday between Nijgadh Municipality of Bara and Nijgadh Tilganga Community Eye Hospital to create a cataract-free municipality.
An agreement has been signed between the municipality and the community eye hospital to identify and treat blindness caused by cataracts.
Residents of Nijgadh Municipality are suffering from vision problems due to cataracts. To solve this, the agreement has been signed to visit every household in Nijgadh Municipality, check their eyes, identify cataracts, and restore their vision by performing surgery on those with cataract problems, said Sudhir Shrestha, a senior officer of the community eye hospital.
The agreement signed between Nijgadh Municipality Mayor Surath Puri and the Chief Operating Officer of Tilganga Eye Hospital states that Nijgadh Tilganga Community Eye Hospital, in collaboration with Nijgadh Municipality, will examine the eyes of all citizens living in Nijgadh Municipality, identify all patients with cataracts, and provide free treatment to the economically weak, senior citizens, and the poor.
Mayor Puri said that the main objective of this program is to make Nijgadh Municipality a municipality free from blindness due to cataracts. The agreement letter mentions that financially strong cataract patients will be provided with cataract surgery at a subsidized rate under the community-based program using cutting-edge technology.
According to this agreement, the municipality will bear the cost of manpower and medicine. There are 13 wards in Nijgadh Municipality. Senior officer Shrestha said that eye tests will be conducted at the homes of all the wards.
‘We will bring those with cataract problems to the hospital and perform surgery, and we will provide medicine to others as needed,’ he said. One of the important reasons that can cause blindness in Nepal is cataracts.
