Snow has started falling in the Shailung area of Ramechhap in mid-Magh this year. The snowfall began in the hills of Shailung on Wednesday morning amid increasing drought due to lack of rain for a long time.
Local farmers are happy with the snowfall. It is expected that the required moisture will reach the fields and have a positive impact on production. According to local farmer Dawasangbu Sherpa, a resident of Daduwa, Doramba Shailung Rural Municipality-1, it is believed that the problem of irrigation will be reduced as the snow gradually melts, as sufficient water will accumulate in the soil.
‘Snow increases the fertility of the soil, reduces the risk of pests and diseases in crops,’ he said, ‘This time’s snowfall has given new hope and enthusiasm to farmers.’ He said that even though there is no heavy snowfall, the snowfall is increasing, and there is a possibility of more snowfall at night.
The Shailung area has been producing well potatoes, wheat, barley, yams and seasonal vegetables. Farmers say that since the production of potatoes decreases in years without snowfall, they are hoping for a good production this year with the snowfall.
The mountains of Shailung look white and picturesque after the snowfall. Locals say that the number of domestic tourists coming to play in the snow has started increasing.
