A state-of-the-art water testing laboratory built with a joint investment from the Federal Water Supply and Sewerage Management Office and the Hetauda Water Supply Management Board has become operational.
The laboratory established in the premises of the Hetauda Water Management Board office was inaugurated by Hetauda Sub-metropolitan City Chief Meena Kumari Lama during a ceremony on Monday. Stating that safe and quality drinking water is a fundamental right of citizens, she expressed confidence that the new and state-of-the-art laboratory will make water quality testing scientific, reliable and as per standards. She said that the laboratory will play an important role in providing clean and pure water to the residents of the city. The Executive Director of the Board, while informing about the technical aspects of the laboratory, informed that 28 types of physical, chemical and microbiological tests prescribed in accordance with the National Drinking Water Quality Standards 2079 and the Implementation and Monitoring Guidelines 2079 for the same standards will be conducted in the initial phase. According to him, although the board has been testing water using ordinary equipment since 2075 BS, now the test results will be more reliable and as per the standards with the use of modern equipment. At the program, Krishna Saru Magar, President of the Federation of Journalists Bagmati Province, said that the establishment of the laboratory is an important achievement for public health security.
The cost of establishing the laboratory and purchasing equipment was estimated at 3 million rupees, and the equipment was supplied and installed by Kathmandu-based JHS Analytical Company for 2.2 million rupees through the bidding process.
In addition, 1 million rupees have been spent on the construction of the laboratory's infrastructure, furniture fitting, marble installation, electrical work, etc., while 250 thousand rupees have been spent on the purchase of necessary chemicals and reagents, according to the board. The laboratory has been established at a cost of 3.4 million rupees. In which 1.1 million rupees have been invested by the federal government and 2.3 million rupees have been invested by the board, according to the Water Management Board.
The new laboratory will not only provide testing services for Hetauda and Makawanpur districts, but also for water samples coming from neighboring districts and Madhesh Province, according to the board.
