Makawanpurgadhi Rural Municipality of Makawanpur has set a minimum support price for indigenous crops produced within the municipality.
The rural municipality has fixed a new price for indigenous agricultural produce for the current fiscal year. The municipality has set the minimum support price of millet at Rs 60 per kg. The municipality has fixed the price of bitter gram at Rs 90 per kg and sweet gram at Rs 105 per kg. The rural municipality's agriculture branch chief Gopal Lamsal said that the support price of yellow gram has been fixed at Rs 84 per kg, white gram at Rs 120 per kg and black gram at Rs 130 per kg. The municipality has stated that, like in the previous year, the municipality will provide subsidy to farmers by purchasing and selling indigenous crops through farmers, farmer groups and cooperatives. The rural municipality chairman Dorje Lama said that a subsidy of Rs 4 per kg is being provided to the cooperative that purchases millet and gram produced by farmers in Makawanpurgadhi and manages the market, and Rs 6 per kg is being provided to the farmers who sell millet and gram in the cooperative. He said that Raithani crops are cultivated on 600 hectares across the municipality.
The rural municipality has been providing subsidies on millet and phapar for the past 5 years to increase the production of indigenous crops.
The rural municipality had implemented the indigenous crop purchase-sale subsidy program through cooperatives under the agricultural development program since 2077/078. Last year, about 180 quintals of indigenous crops were produced in the municipality. The municipality expects production to increase this year.
Wards 1, 2, 4, 7 and 8 of the municipality are millet and wards 6 and 8 are phapar pocket areas. The rural municipality has stated that about 500 households are benefiting from the municipality's indigenous crop promotion program.
Community schools in Makawanpurgadhi Rural Municipality have also been preparing and serving dishes made from indigenous crops for lunch.
