Farmers in Bhatauli field, Manthali Municipality-7, are currently busy bringing in the paddy that has just sprouted. In this field, which is considered the most fertile in the district, farmers are seen busy weeding, carrying and storing paddy throughout the field. However, despite looking busy with work, the faces of the farmers are not happy.
Everyone is worried and sad. The continuous unseasonal rains from Kartik 12 to 15 have submerged the harvested rice of many farmers in Bhatauli field. Both the rice and the straw have deteriorated and become useless after four days of continuous rain. Local farmer Ram Bahadur Khatri says, 'I don't know when this happened. Earlier, it used to rain for only a day or a little, but this time it rained continuously . Both the rice and the straw in the field that used to grow 30-40 muri rice were useless.'
Devaki Bhujel, another farmer from Bhatauli, is also in similar pain. According to her, this year the rice had grown well and the harvesting had started as it was ripe early. However, the rains that fell the next day have wasted all the hard work. She says, 'All the rice has become wet and sprouted, now this rice is not edible. We have to store it only to make fodder for the animals.'
