A public holiday has been given in three districts of Bagmati province on Sunday, August 22, on the occasion of Chonam (Nuwagi) festival, which is associated with the identity of the Chepang community. The government of Bagmati Province has decided to give a public holiday in three districts of the province on the occasion of Chonam (Nuwagi) of Chepang community.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law issued a notification on Thursday and said that Sunday, August 22, has been declared a public holiday in Chitwan, Makwanpur and Dhading districts.
The Bagmati Province Council of Ministers decided on 9 March 2081 to give a public holiday on 22 August every year in Chepang-dominated district Makwanpur, Chitwan and Dhading and published it in the provincial gazette. The Bagmati state government has been giving a public holiday on the 22nd of August for the past two years on the occasion of Chonam festival in Chepang.
According to Ravita Karki, co-spokesperson of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law, it was decided to give the leave according to the notice published on 21st Chait 2081 in the Bagmati Province Gazette, Volume 8, Number 32, Part 3. According to him, holidays are given on the occasion of Nuwagi festival in the districts where the Chepang community is densely settled.
There are 35 thousand 637 Chepangs living in Chitwan district with 18 thousand 100 males and 17 thousand 537 females. Similarly, in Makwanpur there are 23 thousand 650 of 11 thousand 972 males and 11 thousand 678 females. There are 17 thousand 160 Chepang living in Dhading, 8 thousand 687 men and 8 thousand 473 women. Raksirang Rural Municipality of Makwanpur, which is dominated by Chepang, has given public holidays for three days on August 21, 22 and 23.
During the Nuwagi festival, the Chepang community eats only by offering new crops and fruits to their ancestors. This is an important cultural festival of Chepang community.
