Indra Bahadur Baniyan has been appointed as the Chief Minister of Bagmati State Government. Provincial Chief Minister Deepak Prasad Devkota appointed Banian as Chief Minister on Tuesday. Baniyan submitted his claim on Monday with the support of 64 people including 37 from Congress and 27 from UML. The support of 56 MPs is required to form the government in the 110-member state assembly.
He became the Chief Minister with the support of a total of 64 MPs including Nepali Congress and CPN-UML in the 110-member state assembly.
Baniyan, who is also the Chairman of Nepali Congress Bagmati Province Committee, has become the sixth Chief Minister of Bagmati Province.
Earlier, Dormani Poudel, Ashtalakshmi Shakya, Rajendra Prasad Pandey, Shalikram Jamkattel and Bahadur Singh Lama have become Chief Ministers in Bagmati Province. Baniyan is the second Chief Minister from Makwanpur.
After Bahadur Singh Lama resigned as the Chief Minister on Sunday, Provincial Chief Devkota called upon the Provincial Assembly members who can get a majority with the support of two or more parties represented in the Provincial Assembly to submit claims to the Chief Minister according to Article 168 (2) of the Constitution.
On July 9, 21 MPs led by Baniyan filed a motion of no confidence against the party leader Lama, who is also the Chief Minister.
