The bridge built on the Rapti River at Hetaunda on the East-West Highway is becoming dangerous due to lack of maintenance.
When the flood of Rapti River during the rainy season pushes the pillar, the iron inside has started to be seen. The bridge is 210 meters long and has seven pillars. The cement on the outside of most of the pillars has been damaged.
43 years ago, the access road towards Hetaunda of the bridge built by an Indian company was washed away in the year 2059. The bridge built in 2039 has not been repaired yet, so the risk is increasing.
"Iron rods have started to be seen at the bottom of most of the pillars of the bridge, preparations are being made to repair them," said Yadav Subedi, Information Officer of the Road Division Office, Hetounda, "We will conduct an on-site study of the bridge from the relevant experts and repair it according to the suggestions of the experts." Siddhi Shrestha, a resident of Hetaunda-11, said that if the pillars and other parts are repaired in time, the damage will be reduced. There are seven spans of the bridge built on the Rapti River between Hetaunda sub-city-10 and Ward No. 11.
More than 10,000 vehicles pass through the bridge every day. Before the construction of the said bridge, a causeway was built on Rapti river.
