Water Supply Minister Pradeep Yadav has said that Melamchi water will be distributed uninterruptedly to the houses of Kathmandu residents even during the rainy season.

After on-site monitoring and inspection of the drinking water tank built in Riberma river in Melamchi today, Minister Yadav said that there will be continuous supply of clean drinking water to the people of Kathmandu even during the rainy season.

He said, 'The drinking water tank constructed in Riberma river for distribution of water in Kathmandu has been successfully tested today. Keeping in mind the risk that will arise with the onset of the rainy season, we have now made arrangements to supply water from Riberma river to Kathmandu through the Melamchi tunnel as an alternative measure.'

Minister Yadav informed that during the rainy season, the water of Riberma River will be sent through the Melamchi tunnel and the water of the river will be distributed to the people of Kathmandu uninterruptedly for twelve months.

He said, 'This arrangement is expected to solve the long-term drinking water problem of the valley dwellers. Now the citizens of Kathmandu do not have to suffer for water during the rainy season. We are a responsible government, it is our responsibility to understand and resolve people's preferences.'

By testing the water of Riberma, breaking the tradition of interruption in Melamchi's water distribution every year during the rainy season, it is said that the water of Melamchi will come to Kathmandu this year also during the rainy season.

Melamchi Water Development Committee Executive Director E Ratnaprasad Lamichhane informed that when Melamchi water cannot be diverted to Kathmandu during rainy season, five to seven million liters can be diverted daily from Rirbama through Melamchi tunnel.

He said, 'All the physical structures required for that have been prepared. At present, a successful test has been conducted to transfer the water to Kathmandu through the water tunnel available in the river. Now water will not be shut off in Kathmandu even during the rainy season.'

Keeping in mind the history of closing the Melamchi tunnel due to rain and floods in the past, special attention has been paid to technology and preparedness this year, said Executive Director Engineer Lamichhane.

The technicians, security personnel and supply teams of the Melamchi project are deployed 24 hours a day, and the maintenance and security of the tunnel and distribution system have been strengthened keeping in mind the high risk of flooding.

After the devastating flood of 2078 caused damage to the estuary area of Melamchi, there was a serious disruption in the regular water supply during the rainy season.
