Makwanpur police have destroyed 120 bighas of 4 kathas and 39 bighas of opium plantations during about ten months of the current financial year.
Every year, Makwanpur police conducts a campaign to uproot cannabis and opium cultivation by reaching different places in Raksirang, Kailash and Manhari in the district. Compared to ten months of the previous financial year 2080/81, it has been found that there has been a very low income this year.
In the previous year, 278 bighas of 3 boxes of hemp and 147 bighas of 5 boxes of 15 dhurs of land were cultivated for opium cultivation. Looking at this data, compared to the previous year, it has been found that only half of the area of drug cultivation has been cleared this year.
Last year, 596 police personnel were mobilized to crackdown on marijuana and opium cultivation, but this year only 320 police personnel were mobilized. Deputy Superintendent of Police Shyamu Aryal, Spokesperson of District Police Office Makwanpur, informed that 120 bighas of 4 kattas of hemp and 39 bighas of opium have been cultivated this year.
This is all we have done this year. It is almost half less than the figures of the previous fiscal year', Aryal said that as many marijuana and opium farms as he saw and met were destroyed. "The Fadani campaign is over for this year."
The police said that every year they conduct a campaign to eradicate and destroy illegal drug cultivation, but there has been no reduction in cultivation. He said that opium cultivation has increased compared to marijuana. "According to the locals, the number of people using opium has increased more than marijuana. Even though the police go to villages every year and launch a campaign to tear up drug cultivation, the locals have not stopped farming," said District Police Spokesperson Aryal.
Locals have alleged that even the local and state governments have failed to provide an alternative to hemp and opium cultivation. Makwanpur is known in the country for drug production, consumption and transportation. Recently, the police have been arresting people with drugs on a daily basis. Until the end of March of the current financial year, Makwanpur police have arrested 193 people with drugs.
Raksirang and Kailash Rural Municipality of Makwanpur have more cannabis and opium cultivation. According to Makwanpur district police office, cannabis cultivation is also done in hilly areas of Manhari Rural Municipality, Thaha Municipality and Hetaunda Sub-Metropolitan Municipality.
