The rhino count, which is done every five years, has been confused due to lack of budget. This year there is a lack of budget due to the fact that it is being counted on the donors.

The National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Department has been counting rhinos in collaboration with various agencies working with the parks. According to Haribhadra Acharya, ecologist and information officer of the department, USAID's water forest project agreed to purchase materials needed for the rhino count, and the count was affected after the program was postponed. The project had already started the process of purchasing the materials by issuing a notification.

The same project was going to bear the expenses of the necessary GPS equipment, laptops, cooking utensils, tents, etc. during the calculations within the park. The project was prepared to give materials worth 5 million rupees. It is estimated that a budget of around Rs 15 million will be spent to complete the calculation,' he said.

Along with water forest, the counting was prepared in partnership with organizations such as World Wildlife Fund Nepal, ZSL Nepal, National Nature Conservation Fund and others. According to him, the calculation should be completed by next March. Preparations were made to publish the results in the first week of Baisakh after counting from 5th of Chait to 25th.

He said, 'The calculation cannot be done after the month of Chait is cut. At least 10 days should be prepared.' He said that the calculation program of the department will be affected after the program of donor agencies got confused at the last moment.   Dr. Ramchandra Kandel, director general of the

department, said that the calculation was affected during the final preparations due to confusion about donor support. He said that if the budget can be obtained after discussing this issue in the ministry, the work will be done otherwise it will be forced to be postponed. He said that since both tasks are not possible at the same time, if we can count rhinoceros this year, it will be easy to count tigers next year.

Rhinos are being monitored, but counting is done to find out the exact statistics and condition. Rhinos were counted in 2021. With the calculation, how many rhinos there are in which area will be determined and management will be easy. There is one horned rhinoceros in the National Park in Chitwan, Parsa, Bardia and Shukla districts. Most of them are in Chitwan. According to the calculation of 2021, the number of rhinos in Nepal has reached 752. The number of one-horned rhinos is the highest in Chitwan National Park at 694.

In Nepal, there were 800 rhinos in 1950, 400 in 1955, 300 in 1960, 100 in 1965, 108 in 1970, 147 in 1975, 310 in 1980, 310 in 1985, 358 in 1990, and 466 rhinos in 1995. is Similarly, it reached 612 in 2000, 409 in 2005, 435 in 2010 and 645 in 2015.
