New home for 100-year-old Chepang couple

The 100-year-old Jairam (Praja) Chepang couple, who have been living in a very narrow shack where sunlight penetrates, have got a new house that is in good condition. They said they were shocked to find a new house with a toilet.

The family of Karn Gurung, who is living in America after moving to Pokhara, built a concrete house for the Jairam couple near Chapro. The newly built house built under the leadership of activist Rekha Lopchan Tamang in Raksirang rural municipality-5 Sachak tol of Makwanpur, was led by the Chepang couple to enter the house on Saturday.

Entering the room with a carpet on the floor and 2 beds with a bed, Jairam said with a smile on his face in Chepang language, "Kim Doti Aasteaya" (I am glad to be home).

Actor Lopchan Tamang has provided them with cash of 242,000 rupees for additional expenses. Former minister Jhankri said that since the procedures of Janata Awas program are not poor and disadvantaged, the procedures should be revised. She said, 'Land commissions are formed. But it does not solve the problems of marginalized and endangered communities like Chepang, Raute, Vankaria. It is necessary to revise the procedures of public housing.' 

Raksiarang Chepang community of Makwanpur is a municipality with majority. According to the 2078 census, the population of Chepang community living in 26 districts of the country is 84 thousand 364. Makwanpur has a population of 23,650, Chitwan has a population of 35,637, Dhading has a population of 17,160 and Gorkha has a population of 4,268.
