The Umakunda rural municipality of Ramechhap has banned the mining of river materials in Likhu river. The municipality has stopped the under-construction hydropower project in Likhu river saying that it has affected the environment by excavating the river indiscriminately.

Chairman Sher Bahadur Sunuwar said that the executive committee meeting held on December 15 of the municipality banned the extraction of river materials from Likhu river. He said that until the report of IEE and EIA is prepared from the Likhu River, the mining of stone, gravel and sand has been stopped.

Locals have said that by drying up the river to generate electricity, aquatic life and wildlife have also been affected.
