Press Council Nepal Chairman Dr. Kumar Sharma Acharya has said that the Press Council will protect journalists and media outlets if they follow the code of conduct.

At the election code of conduct and media interaction organized by the Press Council Nepal and coordinated by the Nepal Federation of Journalists, Bardiya, on Tuesday in Gulariya, Chairman Acharya said that the code of conduct should be followed.

‘The Press Council is a body that protects journalists and protects press freedom,’ said Chairman Acharya, ‘However, one should not assassinate anyone’s character for personal gain.’ He also said that he will not protect unregistered media outlets and non-journalists.

Press Council Nepal’s Deputy Administrative Officer Sabita Dhakal said that the council is conducting regular self-monitoring of journalists and media outlets with a view to the upcoming elections. ‘It is necessary to make the journalism sector systematic, objective, responsible and accountable,’ she said, ‘A code of conduct guideline has been issued for independent journalism in a healthy, clean and systematic manner.’ The Press Council has issued a code of conduct for journalists in 7 languages.

She said that the council is regularly monitoring online and newspaper publications across the country. If it is found that news material is being disseminated in violation of the code of conduct, it will inform the concerned media outlet to make improvements and if it does not comply, it will issue a circular to the concerned body for action.

On the eve of the election, the council has prioritized journalists and made them aware of the election code of conduct, said Nirmal Ghimire, President of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists, Bardiya. ‘We may make some mistakes during the reporting of the election,’ said President Ghimire, ‘The discussion on the election code of conduct has made journalists aware again.’
