Bardiya administration under siege over recruitment into election police based on access

What you should know

The District Administration Office has been surrounded by allegations of irregularities in the recruitment of election police for the upcoming House of Representatives elections. Dissatisfied youths surrounded the District Administration Office on Tuesday, alleging that a person with access to the election police was selected.

Applications for 2,025 election police officers were opened in the district for 1,826 Nepal Police and 200 Armed Police. Of these, 4,400 people registered their applications during the specified period from Poush 25 to Magh 1.

The Election Police Recruitment, Selection and Appointment Committee published the final results on Tuesday morning after the health test, written test and interview. Dissatisfied youth who were not selected for the election police had been protesting in front of the District Police Office since Tuesday morning, saying that the selection process was not transparent and that there was manipulation. A group of dissatisfied youth entered the district administration and even shouted slogans saying that there was manipulation in the election police selection.

Arjun Rasaili of Gulariya Municipality-4 said that the protest was held because the election police were recruited based on access.

Kabita Puri of Mainapokhar said that she was not selected for the election police due to lack of access. ‘I have also passed grade 12, I just wrote my name down,’ she said, ‘In the interview, I was asked my name, address and how much I studied. How could I have forgotten to answer such a question?’ She expressed her sadness that she was not selected for the election police selection without reaching the entrance exam.

Puran Bahadur Sunar of Madhuvan Municipality-7 said that despite leaving all her work for the election police for the past two weeks, she was very sad when the names of those who had access were finally revealed.

Chief District Officer Gogan Bahadur Hamal said that the election police were selected in a fair manner. ‘Those who are not satisfied with the final result have been requested to file an application,’ he said, ‘The exam transcripts of those who came with the application will be re-checked.’
