Following the warning from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the local administration in Dhankuta has issued an alert. The department has urged the public to be on high alert, stating that there is a possibility of strong winds, hail and lightning in Dhankuta, Dharan and Biratnagar and other areas on Friday and Saturday.
According to the department, the wind speed is estimated to reach 119 kilometers per hour. It is said that special precautions are required as thunderstorms, lightning, windstorms and moderate to heavy rains are likely for a few days due to the changing weather system.
Chhintang Gulma Dhankuta under the Armed Police Force Nepal has started miking in the market and surrounding areas to inform the public about the risk. According to Gulmapati Deputy Superintendent of Police Prem Prasad Sigdel, a team has been mobilized to disseminate information from the base camp at Mulghat along with Dhankuta Bazaar.
The department has suggested not to stay in open areas, farmlands, hills and high places and not to go near lonely trees, electricity poles or towers. It has been urged to stay indoors as much as possible and to exercise caution when using electrical appliances.
Similarly, it has been requested not to go out unnecessarily during storms, to keep windows and doors strong, and to stay away from trees, hoarding boards, and weak structures. Drivers have been warned to exercise special caution while driving.
It has also been urged not to stay in risky places and not to travel unnecessarily as the risk of flooding in rivers and streams may increase due to heavy rains and landslides may occur in hilly areas. Deputy Superintendent of Armed Police Sigdel urged to stay in touch with security agencies in case of emergencies and keep the necessary numbers updated. Due to the weather alert, some private and residential schools in Dhankuta Bazaar have declared a holiday on Friday.
