Today, the village has become an employment center for young Krishna Bahadur Manandhar of Madimuhan, Khandadevi Rural Municipality-4.
After learning the skills of motorcycle repair, he has run a motorcycle workshop in his village.
Krishna took a 72-day motorcycle repair training through the Community Development Society. After the training, the organization also provided the necessary equipment for running the workshop, and he started a business in his own village.
'Earlier, when I didn't have the skills, I sometimes worked in a brick kiln, sometimes in a hotel, and sometimes I was unemployed in the village,' he recalled, 'The biggest thing is the skill. Now I am earning a little by making motorcycles in the village.' Krishna says that he started the business by taking some loans along with the equipment provided by the organization. 'Now I can repair up to half an engine,' he said, 'The income is good for the village. It is satisfactory. Even on days when there is no work, four or five motorcycles are needed.'
With the increase in the use of motorcycles in the village, the need for repair services is also expanding. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Lapsang Tamang, a young man from Bhirkot, Sunapati Rural Municipality-5, has also started a business in the village.
Lapsang has also taken a 72-day motorcycle repair training. After the training, he has run a small Sunapati motorcycle workshop near the Sunapati rural municipality office. Today, it is becoming a reliable service center for repairing motorcycles within his rural municipality. 'Until a few years ago, I used to work as a house builder in the village,' he recalled, 'but since my income was low, it was difficult to run a family. Now, my income has increased with the skill of motorcycle repair.'
Lapsang has also provided employment to one person along with running the workshop. 'Now, I can save up to 20,000 rupees per month by managing my expenses,' he said. 'I had earlier prepared to go abroad, but now that foreign earnings are starting to be made in the village, I have decided not to go abroad.' He has experience that if you have skills, labor and opportunities, you can earn income in the village.
Dilip Magar, a young man from Thansing, Khandadevi Rural Municipality-7, is also running a motorcycle workshop in the village and running a family. Dilip, who had been running his family from agriculture and wage labor until a few years ago, was forced to go abroad when his income was not enough. But the skill-based training changed the direction of his life.
After learning that a motorcycle repair training was being conducted, Dilip took a 72-day training. After the training, he borrowed some money and established Khandadevi Dilip Motorcycle Workshop in his own village. 'Before starting this business, I used to run my family by doing agriculture, house building and wood chopping,' said Dilip. 'I had thought of going abroad when it was difficult to meet expenses. But now I am earning enough to support my family from this workshop.'
According to him, he currently saves up to 20,000 rupees per month by cutting all expenses. 'I plan to expand the business with the money saved,' he said. 'I am confident that my income will continue to increase.'
Now, Krishna Bahadur Manandhar, Lapsang Tamang and Dilip Magar have become examples that skills and hard work can be used to build a future in the village. They are demonstrating in practice the potential of local small businesses to become an alternative to foreign employment.
