At least 65 people were killed in a powerful cyclone that brought heavy rains and storms in Bangladesh and India on Wednesday, according to officials and media in both countries.

The death toll from the cyclone in India and Bangladesh has reached 65

Cyclone Remal, which came with heavy rains and storms on Sunday evening, gradually moved inland and caused landslides. Azizur Rahman, director of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, said the cyclone and heavy rains were the result of climate change and it was "one of the longest in the country's history".

According to the disaster management office and the police, at least 17 people have died in Bangladesh, which was hit by the cyclone. Some died due to drowning and others were electrocuted by debris, falling trees or downed power lines.

Officials have said that 47 people have died, updating the previous number of twenty-one deaths in India. Twenty-eight people died in the cyclone in the northeastern state of Mizoram, of which 14 workers died after being buried in a mine due to the storm that occurred on Tuesday, the Mizoram government said in a statement.

Senior government official Sumit Gupta said on Wednesday that ten people died in the state of West Bengal. According to a report quoted by Hindustan Times, at least 10 people have died in the states of Assam, Nagaland and Meghalaya.

Every year, cyclones cause great damage to Bangladesh and India. Scientists say climate change is fueling more storms.

However, good forecasts and effective evacuation plans have kept the death toll low.
