Gathemangal i.e. Ghantakarna which is celebrated every year on the day of Shravan Krishna Chaturdashi is being celebrated on Friday in Taplejung. Along with this festival, Lakhejatra starts in Taplejung.
This festival, which is considered to be the oldest festival celebrated by the Newar community, starts from Bhintuna Danda Joubari.
Shankar Shrestha, president of Nepal Language and Cultural Society, informed that lakhs will be collected in a special program at the Bhimsen Temple in Bhintuna Danda. The society has its own building and office in Bhintuna. According to cultural tradition, this festival is celebrated in every area where the Newar community lives. In Taplejung, outside the headquarters Fungling, lacs are also extracted in Dobhan market.
According to the elders, it used to be like a competition before Fungling Bazar and Dobhan Lache Dance. There used to be a special discussion and a crowd of people watching when the lakhs of Fungling Bazar went to Dobhan and when the lakhs of Dobhan Bazar came to Fungling. In this festival, which has been celebrated since ancient times, there is a custom of mixing green reeds, nigal, and wheat chawali to form a three-legged monster and keeping it in a bowl as a reminder of the killing of the cannibal monster named Gathemangal.
In Taplejung, the chief guest is made to light it and the lache dance begins.
The slaughter of Lakh takes place on the day after Sri Krishna Janmashtami. On the day of Krishna Janmashtami, Lord Krishna is born and there is a tradition of slaughtering Lakh, a demon who does injustice to the society . During this period, they show distorted forms like asking for money, if they don't give it, they take it by force . In Taplejung, Lakhejatra festival starts with Gantakarna. Lakh dances are performed every day in the major markets of the district.
On the day of Raksha Bandhan and Janai Purnima, there is a special lac dance. On the next day, there is cow slaughter, and on the third day there is planting. On the day of Gaijatra, the Newar community has a tradition of taking out their symbols and going around the city in memory of those who have passed away throughout the year .
Planting Jatra is done on the third day after Raksha Bandhan to give a glimpse of paddy planting . On the day after Krishna Janmashtami, festivals like Teej and Dasain begin after the slaughter of lakhs.
On the occasion of Lakhejatra, an international gold cup football tournament has been organized at Bhanujan Mavi near Taplejung headquarters, Fungling. This year's competition will be conducted from August 3rd to 10th.
