The government has declared the municipality most affected by last week's landslide and inundation as a 'disaster-prone area'. In order to prioritize relief and reconstruction, the government has declared the municipalities of 14 districts as crisis areas for three months.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority had recommended to the government on Friday to declare the disaster area after assessing the disaster situation. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Executive Committee, chaired by Home Minister Ramesh Akhtar, has recommended the declaration of disaster areas.
In the Disaster Risk Reduction and Displacement Act, 2074, there is a provision that the government can declare a disaster-prone area by specifying the boundaries and duration of such an area in case of a disaster of a serious nature.
Government spokesperson Prithvisubba Gurung, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, said that relief and reconstruction will be speeded up in the areas that have been declared disaster-prone. In order to speed up the work of relief, rescue and reconstruction, the government had earlier declared the affected areas of Jajarkot and Rukum as crisis zones when the earthquake occurred.
