A study has shown that the number of Nepalis in the US has increased by 60 percent in the last decade and a half, and about 60 percent of them send remittances to Nepal. A study report published by the think tank organization 'Integral Development Study Center (IIDS)' on Tuesday showed that a large part of Nepalis living in the US send regular remittances.
IIDS has published the study report 'Nepali Migrant Dreams in the American Landscape: An Exploration of the Nepali Diaspora in the United States'. According to the report, 1.28 billion dollars of remittances came into Nepal from America in 2023. This is 12 percent of Nepal's total remittances. Nepal's main sources of remittances are Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, India, Qatar and America.
'We conducted a survey among 1200 Nepalis,' said Arunraj Joshi, one of the authors of the report The study showed that the average remittance is 8 thousand 666 dollars.
It is also mentioned in the study that 59.6 percent of about 2 lakh Nepalis send regular remittances and 40.4 percent do not send any amount. About 20 percent of Nepalese have an annual income of zero to 15 thousand dollars, 12 percent have an income of 15 thousand to 30 thousand dollars, 7.45 percent have an income of 45 thousand to 60 thousand, 7 percent have an income of 75 thousand to 90 thousand dollars and 2 percent have an annual income of 1 lakh 35 thousand to 1 lakh. 50 thousand dollars. Although the amount of remittances from America is relatively low, the per capita contribution is high compared to other countries.
The per capita remittance sent from Qatar is 4 thousand 327 dollars per year on average, while it is only 3 thousand 361 dollars from Saudi Arabia and 2 thousand 876 dollars from Malaysia. The average per capita remittance to Nepal from the UAE, which has the largest number of migrant workers, is $3,801. "Per capita remittances sent from the United States are 1.51 times that of Qatar, 1.95 times that of Saudi Arabia, and 2.28 times that of Malaysia," Vibhav Pradhan, the author of the study report, said while releasing the report. The contribution is about 11.62 percent.'
It is mentioned in the study that 6.3 percent of Nepalis in America send money to their family members through informal channels as well. In the US, 70.6 percent of Nepalese who earn more than 80 thousand send remittances less than 10 thousand, while 21 percent send remittances between 10 thousand to 30 thousand dollars and only 1.2 percent send more than 70 thousand.
It seems that 13.2 percent of Nepalis in America invest in Nepal and 9.5 percent in America. Of that, 55.6 percent will invest in Nepal's real estate sector, 35.2 percent in banking and financial sector, 20.4 percent in hydropower and clean energy, 11 percent in tourism, 7.4 percent in education and agriculture, and 6.5 percent in information technology and media sector. have done
"Because most of them invest in Kathmandu, this may be one of the reasons why the price of real estate here has gone down," said the writer Pradhan. 58.2 percent of the participants in the study said that they spent less than 10,000 dollars while traveling from Nepal to America, while 7.5 percent responded that they came to America by spending more than 50,000 dollars.
Although there is a lot of talk about how much remittances enter Nepal in terms of immigration, the study mentions that attention should also be paid to the amount of money leaving Nepal. Last year alone, 112,000 students took no-objection letters for studying abroad, while students who went abroad took 125 billion rupees abroad.
In this survey, the highest 58 percent said that they came to America primarily to seek educational opportunities or for higher education. One-third i.e. 35 percent of Nepali expats in the US are involved in the technology sector, while 16 percent are employed in the health sector, 8 percent in finance, 7 percent in education, and 7 percent in the food and hotel service sector.
