Ganesh Karki, Chairman of Independent Power Producers Association, Nepal (IPPAN), said that there are good investment opportunities in Nepal's energy sector not only in production but also in transmission and distribution infrastructure. Addressing the session on 'Possibilities and journey of renewable energy in Nepal' under the Third Investment Conference 2024 held in Kathmandu, Chairman Karki said that the private sector can also play an important role in the construction of transmission lines.

He said that if the private sector has the opportunity to build and operate transmission lines, it can play an important role in increasing the reliability of electricity and reducing leakages. There is great potential for cross-border lines and energy projects in countries with energy demand in South Asia. With the participation of the private sector, cross-border line construction, electricity export and technology transfer can be realized,'' Karki said, 'but, in the construction of the transmission line, there are problems to deal with forest and environment, land acquisition and procedural complications.'

President Karki said that the private sector will play an important role in domestic and international electricity trade. For that, he informed that the private sector is working by building infrastructure, market study, risk study, cooperation search and policy making. Karki also said that the private sector is working on a partnership model including equity, credit, technology, and marketing for electricity business.

Making a strategic plan for Nepal's clean and green energy, the private sector is also planning for the sustainable development of this sector. Karki urged foreign investors to invest in Nepal's energy sector as there is great potential not only in power generation for the private sector in Nepal, but also in construction of transmission and distribution infrastructure, energy efficiency and electricity trade.

In order to attract domestic and foreign investors, Karki said that the government should pay attention to certain things such as stability and clarity in our policy, simple procedures, investment security and guarantee, support in infrastructure construction, risk reduction mechanisms, easy repatriation arrangements, etc. Karki also said.
